Evidently a place of contrasts, it was named the #1 Area Boomtown in 2005 and then ranked by New Jersey Monthly as the worst place to live in 2006.
- Swedesboro is home of the Nothnagle Log Cabin. Built around 1638 by Swedish or Finnish settlers, it is the oldest standing log cabin in North America, and may be the oldest standing wooden structure in the Western Hemisphere.
- Swedesboro was originally part of the Swedish colony of New Sweden, which was established in 1638. Despite defeat by the Dutch in 1655, New Sweden maintained its independence until 1681, when William Penn received his charter for the area.
- In 1957 the United States Army established a Nike missile base in Woolwich Township. As part of a nationwide defense system, the base held underground surface-to-air missiles, and was even home to Hercules Missiles, which carried a small nuclear payload designed to destroy entire fleets of Russian bombers. Fortunately, the missiles never had to be used, and while the site still exists, it lies in ruin.
LATEST SUGGESTIONS FOR EXIT 2
Another great idea for Exit 2 would be focusing on how Woolwich Twp. was first known as Raccoon. An early name for the area of Swedesboro was Raccoon, so named for the Creek in the same vicinity, which is still in existence. During the 17th century Swedish settlers from the Swedish colony of New Sweden came upstream along Raccoon Creek to found and settle the communities of Bridgeport (originally called New Stockholm) and Swedesboro. Since raccoons are two-toned light and dark colored creatures, a Flying Fish Raccoon Creek Black and Tan would be a great idea for Exit 2.

Col. Robert Brown is a very historical figure in the town of Swedesboro, NJ. He was a lawyer, storekeeper, money lender, patriot, head of a militia in Swedesboro and Colonel in the American Army during the Revolutionary War. He owned over 1000 acres of land which he purchased from early settlers in Swedesboro, NJ, including a 63 acre island just below the bridge over Raccoon Creek called Thoroughfare Island, dating back to 1676. His main house, of many he owned, still stands on the corner of Main and Allen Streets. I believe a Brown Ale should be brewed for Exit 2, being called the Colonel Robert Brown Ale...being a play on words, especially since Flying Fish does not have a brown ale!

Trinity Church off of Kings Highway in Swedesboro, NJ was one of the first churches in our area, and is well known nation-wide. It was founded in 1703 and the congregation originally met in Schorn Log Cabin. Since early 14th century, monks in germany were required to fast. Bocks and doppelbock beers are higher in food energy and nutrients than lighter lagers, thus providing sustenance during this period. I'm thinking Exit 2 could be called the Exit 2 Trinity Congregator (doppelbock), paying homage to the Salvator, with the theme that much like a great church..a great brew will bring people together!
