Home of the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University.
- The first settler of Monroe was James Johnstone of Ochiltree, Scotland in 1685. He came to what was then called East Jersey after being offered 50 acres of land and 25 additional acres for each family member that came with him.
- Monroe Township was incorporated as a municipality on February 23, 1838. It was named after the 5th President of the United States James Monroe.
- In 1847, Harrison W. Crosby of Jamesburg became the first person to successfully can tomatoes commercially. Once his process was perfected he sent canned Jersey tomatoes to notable figures such as President James K. Polk and Queen Victoria of England.
- Jamesburg was named after James Buckelew. In 1847, when the Monroe School System refused to admit an African American boy, Buckelew built a schoolhouse of his own, declaring it open to all children. The school was referred to as “James B.” school, or “Jamesburg” school.
- Chartered in 1746, the College of New Jersey, now called Princeton University, is the 4th oldest college in the United States.
Stop seven on our multi-year trip to explore the state of New Jersey through its beer and culture, is Exit 9, best known as the Rutgers University exit. The state’s university, Rutgers, began in 1771 with classes held at a local tavern though by 1810, students were banned from frequenting “beer and oyster houses.” Alumni include Nobel Laureates, astronauts, brewery founders, authors, actors and perhaps most notably, the cartoon character Mr. Magoo.
To celebrate Exit 9, we brewed a richly flavored red beer crafted with a variety of domestic and imported malts and a classic American yeast strain. Assertively hopped with Amarillo, Centennial, Chinook and Citra, the bouquet has complex notes of citrus and tropical fruits, with an appropriate bitterness in the finish. Serve it with spicy foods (try gumbo or curry), a rich blue or sharp cheddar cheese or enjoy it by itself.
PREVIOUS SUGGESTIONS FOR EXIT 9
EXIT 9 BARLEYWINE fits well on three different levels. First, if you go south on Route 18, and exit off 527 towards Monroe, you will hit many old age communities. Second, Barleywines can sometimes have a scarlet tinge to them, and of course, we all know the Scarlet Knights. Third, Exit 9 Barleywine has a nice ring to it, no? I'd suggest a more English style Barleywine though.

Old Scarlet, an aged red(scarlet) ale with a big ABV.
Or streching it how about a smoked beer (bacon flavored) in honor of the first college football game between RU and PU. Football > Pig skin > Bacon flavored.
